Eeps! How could I forget? I drove to LAX to see Lena off back to Seattle. She and her family spent the last few days at Disneyland and it was so great to see her. The last time I got to see her was this time last year at Mattias' 4th birthday party. It was very special to see a friend from home, and Lena is also a link to PLU and my college girlfriends that I rarely get to see anymore.
As proof that we actually did manage to find each other at LAX, there is a great picture of us on her blog, which I will post later.
My bad, Lena! Sorry I forgot to mention it in the last post. It was early in the morning when I was writing and I wasn't thinking clearly. I'm a goob! :)
Moving on and moving up in the great city of Tacoma. And yes, I still dream of being a stage-actress.

Not much to do
Our main database is down at work today. Apparently some upgrades and changes are being implemented which means I don't have much to do today. All my reports use that database for information! So I'm browsing the net and answering phones, anxiously awaiting the time when I go to lunch and can read my book.
This weekend was wonderfully relaxing. Matt and I just hung out at home, we did not set foot outside, except to the store. On Saturday night, Don and Cindy came over for a scrumptious dinner, if I do say so myself. I made a mushroom and onion quiche (the recipe is from one of the Moosewood Restaurant Cookbooks) and a salad, served with a fabulous Pinot Noir from Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards up in San Luis Obisbo. For desert, I have had this craving for Strawberry Shortcake, so that's what I made. Homemade biscuits and whipped cream with fresh strawberries that had a touch of sugar, served with a Syrah Rose from Hunts Cellars in Paso Robles. All of us were stuffed quite happily, and Cindy fell asleep between the two meals. Wine and benadryl will do that to a person but I was happy that she was comfy enough to rest.
Sunday I spent in my PJ's, as did Matt, for most of the day. It was fun being lazy and not doing much except to just spend time together in the same place.
I just got a big project to do for work, so I better go!

Labor Day Weekend and update on kitten
Labor Day Weekend couldn've lasted a few more days, right? I don't know anyone that wanted to go back to work, especially Mary and I. Friday night Matt and I stayed in, had dinner at home and just relaxed. On Saturday we lazed around and then Chandra and Nathan came over for a visit. They have an adorable Pug named Capone who stayed home, but Chandra loves cats so she came over to play with them and get her kitty fix (Nathan is allergic to cats so they have to stick with dogs). The afternoon extended into the evening and we ordered in sushi from Niko Niko which was amazing. Best sushi I've had in a long time! Very filling and the rolls were the right size.
They headed home into the hot humid night (it was 100+ all weekend). We went to bed shortly after they left and woke up Sunday at 11am to get ready for the day at the beach! Ben and Mary left their parking spot open for us as it was very crowded and very busy. We headed to lunch at Mao's down the street which was fun. It's totally Venice Beach - open space, casual menu's and veggie options for everything. I loved it. Then we headed back to their apartment and changed into our swimsuits for some beach and wave time! It was terribly hot that day so Mary and I immediately headed into that blissfully cool ocean water, and it totally worked. My body cooled off instantly and we had fun getting beaten up by those giant ocean waves. We came back to the sand and watched the bags while Ben and Matt left to get water, buy Matt a hat, and get some shade. They came back just as we dried off and so we girls headed back into the water, this time it was more of a shock to the system! My teeth started chattering but I didn't care - I was finally cool! Mary and I had a grand time chatting and catching up on all kinds of topics, and I hope hope hope we can get together again very soon as I've missed her very much! Matt and got home late but I felt very relaxed and ready to sleep.
Monday we had the a/c on at 80 degrees which was cool compared to the 108 degree furnace on the outside. All in all, it was nice to be cooled off, see friends and spend some time with good friends. We spent a litttle too much money dining out, but I didn't mind somehow. It all added to the experience of having a good weekend.
Kitten is doing well. Thank you for all the name suggestions! We chose "Ali" as it seems to fit her best (Thanks Lena!). She's definitely Matt's cat, he's crazy about her. Quinn is getting a little better (less hissing) and PJ is exhausted after being chased all day. We still put her in the office when she's causing trouble and annoying the other cats. She's entertaining, though, and brings new energy to our lives and our new home.

Minor detail
Thanks to Jenny's comment, I realized I forgot to mention that Donny did email me back and said he couldn't take her. I guess his wife said no. :(
Yay for us though! She's ours to keep. And thank you for all the suggestions. We're trying them out, seeing which ones fit her personality.
Weekend plans include spending Sunday at Venice Beach with Ben and Mary. I'm excited to get to the beach and spend some time in the sun. But not that much. It's going to be hot and I don't want to get sunburned. 106 today in Burbank. YUCK!
Lena is going to be here next week! Well, in Disneyland, but still in the general vincinity. We're going to try to meet up the morning she leaves for breakfast or coffee or something (Lena, we need to talk this weekend).

None of these seem to fit. Any ideas? We've just been calling her "Kitten".

Meet "Tragedy"
I don't know if he can say no after looking at those big beautiful eyes and sweet face.
Little Kitty Update
I talked to Donny at the local coffee house to see if he knew of anyone that wanted a kitten. And get this! He has been wanting a cat for the last 6 months but his wife kept saying no. But he wants to meet her. So I'm going to email him a picture tonight and see what they say.
So this morning Matt took her in to get shots and have a thorough examination and everything is fine. Apparently she's getting even more comfortable in the bathroom and is playing, exploring, and finally using her litterbox. Matt's not sure now about giving her away, and neither am I. I don't know what to tell Donny at this point. Maybe to wait and see if she winds up getting along with our cats? It's only been a few days...I don't know what to do.
I do know, that if we keep her, PJ and Quinn will not be very thrilled with her at the start. Hopefully that can change. At the very least, maybe "Tragedy" will start chasing Quinn around and Quinn will lose some weight.
I'll post a picture tonight. She really is adorable!

New kitty?
Last night when we were shooting "Alive", someone came in from the parking lot carrying a little kitten. She was terrified and shaking, poor thing. We thought she had been run over by a car since he had found her under one (her leash, a shoelace, was caught). So Matt, Jon (who she was clinging to), and I raced her over to a nearby emergency clinic.
Her tail isn't broken. She had terrible fleas, and after the shock, beacame one of the sweetest kittens I'd ever seen. Rubbing against us, purring as loud as possible. Meowing and chirping, so happy. She got some tests done - totally healthy - at least so far.
We brought her home around midnight then Matt ran out to Ralph's to get some kitten food and litter. She's in the bathroom while Quinn is stalking the door, trying to catch a glimpse of this strange creature.
I'm so exhausted - only 5 hours of sleep after a 12 hour day of shooting. We're not sure if we'll keep her. Right now it's important to keep the kitties separated and let them get used to each other's scent.
If any of our friends in L.A. are looking for a sweet, good natured, loving little grey kitten with a slightly odd tail (it's a birth defect, in a little corkscrew, almost), let us know. If we can't keep her, we'd like to find her a good home.

Things unsaid
I'm putting myself out there.
It's 11:11pm at night. I just got home a few hours ago from a wonderful day with my husband. As most of you know, today marks the 1 year anniversary of Mom's passing. I didn't cry. I didn't yell or get angry. We had a peaceful day outside the city, enjoying the scenery and each other.
I am feeling sad though, and not because of Mom. Or maybe so, I'm not sure. But I'm realizing, after reading friends blogs and emails, that I've really shut myself off from those around me. I've been rather selfish with my friends, I think, in that I've been so focused on myself and not sharing what's going through my head, however, I've not been that great of a listener either. I want to be open to new ideas, to new opinions. I want to be more flexible in what I do in my free time, and not make a fuss when my friends suggest something that I may not want to do. I feel like what I've done is cut myself off because I'm afraid of emoting, afraid of being vulnerable. Everyone says I seem to be doing really well but I'm not. I'm cracking, and it's going to hit soon, and I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Everyone seems to be having these amazing experiences, with their kids, with ther new jobs and families, with their new adventures. And my life just seems to keep repeating itself. I really don't know where this last year went, I don't remember much at all. Is that normal? Is that bad? That I can't remember who I talked to and what I said or what the other person said? I feel so terribly lost and confused, and I'm spiraling down, unable to catch myself and come back to my centered, stable self.
What makes it worse is that I feel terribly cut off from my friends up North. I rarely talk to them anymore and when I do, there isn't much to say because we haven't talked in so long. And I don't know what to say because I'm so caught up in my own emotions that I don't have room for much else. But I want to care and I want to know. I want to help. I want to hear what their lives are like and be able to relate to my friends. I'm scared that in a few years, we'll barely talk at all. Sure, emails and blogs are easy, but it's those phone calls that mean "I want to take the time to talk to you one on one because I care."
Is it strange I feel out of the loop with my friends who have kids? They are experiencing the wonders and joys of motherhood and I so enjoy reading their stories and experiences. It's like a free advice column for me when I have children (but we're not ready yet). And yet, I can't relate. I don't know what it's like to give birth, to breastfeed, to be up all night with a sobbing baby. And I'm so proud to know these women who are raising kids, yet I can't talk to them about it because I don't know. Anything.
I was talking to Matt today about how I want to be more aware, about history, culture, politics. I find that I want to be more like my Mother, who was so smart and well rounded in so many subjects. I feel left out when conversations are going on around me, with words and phrases I don't understand. I hate that feeling. Of being an adult and yet still feeling like I'm being left out. But it's my fault for closing myself off to new things. I need to be more open. I need to ask questions and start reading books, to cook more and slow down and enjoy life. I want to become more well rounded and insightful.
I want to be at peace.

A plea to my coworkers
Have some consdieration if you're gone from the office around lunch time and call those of us who are waiting to go to lunch so we can have a break too. Check your cell phone to see we've called you 5 million times and then think, "Huh, maybe I should call the office." Please, be gone all afternoon so the rest of us can starve waiting for you and the glorious moment when you walk through the door and I can throw you a dirty look before running out the door to stuff my face with my lovely TOGO's tunda sandwich.

Goings On
Figures. The only time I have time to blog, really, is at the Early home while I'm waiting for Don to get the board set up and Cindy's picking out her spells.
So much has been going on, I don't even know where to start. Michelle and Sharon were visiting last weekend from Alaska and it was fun to see them. I hadn't seen them since last March so it was a big treat to have them here. I don't know what it is about their visits but something crazy always happens to the 3 of us when they come to visit! We went to Knott's Soak City on Sunday (fun, but not worth 20 bucks) and on our way there a cop car merged on the freeway. He sped up in front of the cars and started swerving in and out of all 4 lanes! Everyone slowed down and started looking at other drivers as if to say "What the eff is this cop doing?" The 3 of us thought that someone stole the cop car and was driving drunk and/or on drugs. Turns out it was to slow down traffic and space out the amount of cars arriving to the scene of a new accident (which, incidentally, was a nasty one involving several motorcycles). It was really weird though, and I think the story of the car being stolen is much more interesting.
I had an interesting therapy session last night which involved my grief and lack of dealing with it. I mentioned to my counselor that when I was little, I loved my art class and used oil pastels all the time. I even won a few school district competitions (one picture I remember was a haunted house on a hill, the sky was green, and half of it was black - that was the hill - I thought the whole thing was gross and I couldn't understand why everyone was making such a big deal out of it). My counselor suggested that I start painting again, as a way to deal with my emotions so they aren't coming out at unexpected times, like at home in the middle of dinner or at work while in the middle of, well, work. It would also be, I think, a wonderful and emotional connection to Mom's memory as she was an artist herself. So, with the birthday money I'm told I'm getting, I plan on buying some new art supplies and starting to create once again. I've been asked by my counselor to bring a sketchbook and the pastels to our next session to use as an outlet while we're talking.
I'm afraid that this will crack my "emotional dam" even further and the flood gates will open and I'll be an emotional mess and not be able to bring myself back to center. I feel like I'm on the cusp of something very emotional and challenging, and also being on the cusp of being a grown, adult woman. It's very confusing and I just want to get there, without all the work. I'm tired of living sometimes, but I know there is so much joy to be had, and I want to experience without all of the sadness and anger. So this journey is a necessity, and hopefully (sooner rather than later) I'll be able to look back and say that I am better for it.

Less Sleep
I am not liking the street noises at night. I miss our old room, the quiet parking lot, and hearing the birds in the morning. Now all I hear are cars, buses, motorcycles, sirens, and helicopters. I haven't been sleeping well (if I do at all) these last 2 nights. It's to the point where I may be leaving work slightly early today just so I can get a nap in. We'll see if that happens. Fridays are my busiest days here and it's pay day for the candidates. I'm going to try to leave after the checks are mailed. Again, we'll see.
Something funny happened the other day. I'm only used to 1 bedroom, so when I was looking for something I was getting increasingly frustrated because I couldn't find it. Then I remembered that we have another room now and it could be in there...and it was! How funny. It didn't even occur to me to check the 2nd bedroom, and that's why we moved in the first place.
This weekend I plan on sleeping and also getting together with Michelle and Sharon, friends from Alaska. I've not seen them since they flew in earlier this week, so I'm hoping to get some quality time with them before work again on Monday. I think the plan for Sunday is Knott's Soak City but I'm not sure.

More space!
Matt called just a little while ago and we're all moved in! Of course, I take no credit. Matt and his friends did all the work on a hot Wednesday morning/afternoon. I can't wait to see how our new place looks and cook in my new kitchen!
And apparently, PJ and Quinn are completely freaked out, hiding under the bed and as close to the wall as possible.
My honey rocks. :)

Moving on up
We move to the 4th floor tomorrow. We're feeling a little nostalgic about leaving this little apartment. It was our first place here in a new city, where we knew no one but each other. It was our place when Matt was in school, when I was out of work, when we were both grieving over significant losses this past year. And now that we're leaving, we're looking back at all the progress we have made. We've come so far with new jobs, new friends, and a new start in our new place.
(Just an FYI, the cable guy can't come until Monday, so we'll be without internet and cable until then.)
(Had a nice chat with Jenny the other day. Thanks for all your advice and insights, it was great to hear your voice and Patrick's too.)

Working over lunch
I can't stand not leaving the office for my lunch break. That precious hour is my break to get away from the office, from the phones, from people demanding my time. My lunch break is my own time, but unfortunately today I do not get that time to myself. Instead, I've ordered in Thai Food from a highly reccomended restaurant. I think it would taste better outside the office. I can't leave today though. I did not drive and Nicole, my usual lunch buddy, has to stay in. I guess she'll be staying in a lot more so I will have to figure out something else for the days I don't drive.
This weekend Aunt Gwen and cousin-in-law Brenda are flying in for a quick visit. I'm excited to see them but they couldn't have come at a busier time. Friday is a big day at work with our CEO paying a visit along with our 2 Area VP's. Saturday and Sunday are planned for packing as we move next week into our new apartment (with an extra room). Matt understands that I'll need to spend some time with them showing them around, but originally we weren't planning on moving while they were here. In fact, we were planning on having moved already by this point. It's a long story that I don't want to get into right now! Add into this that poor Matt has to have his thesis done by Friday. We're both pretty stressed out.
Still haven't finished Book 7 yet. But the count of falling bodies is steadily climbing. It's quite emotional and very well written. I'm taking my sweet time, because I don't want to miss a word on these pages.

Goodbye, Harry Potter...
NO SPOILERS!! I haven't read the final installment...I'm still on book 5. Need to read book 6 before the final book 7. I saw the movie last night and I really liked how they kept it dark. I liked that they kept it as a transitional film, where Harry is at that awkward phase of turning from a tween to a young adult. I've avoided spoiler articles and reviews of the book, I don't want to know anything.
My job is going well. My life is quite simple now - I go to work and come home! I'm pretty exhausted at the end of the day and have just enough energy to cook. I need to start going to bed at a decent hour so that I can get enough sleep. But I really like what I do and now that the wicked witch has left, big changes are happening and I am ready to move with them.
Matt is doing well too. Busy with all kinds of projects, of course, and ready to be done with school. Still no word from the SciFi Network, and we're starting to get anxious!

A regular night out in the neighborhood
Go figure. The random Monday night we are both craving Taiyo (just down the street) at 7:30 at night, we walk down and who do we see?
...Bobby Lee from MAD TV! We actually got to chat with him a little bit about travels to Europe and he was really nice, a very cool person.
The lovely...
...Minnie Driver! Sitting at La Poubelle in a very passionate conversation with her friend.
On the way back we stopped at an organic juice bar for some browsing and who did we see? I actually saw him walking down the street and gasped...Matt was totally horrified at my lack of restraint...

All in all a fun night out with good food and fun people. We feel like tourists with all this celebrity spotting!

I'm a dork, but I'm a cute dork!
Oh ok, fine, I admit it, I've joined my first D&D campaign. And you know what? I really enjoy it. There are many things happening that I didn't associate with role playing:
1. I'm not up all night. Sessions are only 3 or 4 hours long once a week with good friends.
2. Healthy snacks from now on. No more chips and dip, or $30 worth of cookies from the bakery!
3. Dinner that I don't have to cook. Since we meet at Don and Cindy's place, Cindy cooks and I assist.
4. Extra time with my hubby!
I have fought playing for a long time. I'm not sure why, but it's very fun to see how cute Matt is when he talks to me about role playing. He's thrilled that I've taken an interest in something he's been passionate about for so long, which makes it totally worthwhile. :)
The only downfalls are that Matt picks me up right from work so I don't get to go home until late at night (around 11pm which means a very long day for me), and I'm totally exhausted on Fridays, which are my busiest days. But hey, it's just a few hours until the weekend begins so it's not that bad. The math is the other thing that bugs me. It's just going to take me awhile to get used to what to apply to and when....there's a lot more to RP'ing than I thought!
Cindy best describes on her blog what the session was like last night. It was a longer session than I anticipated, but it certainly was an adventure!
I'm really excited about this gaming group. For the first time in a while ... actually maybe for the first time ever ... I think we have a group that is more intellectually strategic than battle heavy. In our group of 5 players, we have an elf cleric (divine magic/healer), a half-elf favoured soul (divine magic/healer #2), a half-elf rogue (sneaky and stealthy but quite squishy), a half-drow sorcerer/warrior (magic user with big nasty axe), and a Warforged Knight (Damage dealer but too honorable to play dirty). I think it will be interesting trying to solve our challenges creatively rather than just running in with our swords and killing everything in sight. On the other hand, we did almost have a total party wipe out last night from just two mangy rats. True, they weren't just any rats, they were horrid rats, but still how embarrassing would it have been if we were taken out by a couple of rodents before we had even accomplished our first mission. Last night we achieved our first objective, scored big on lots treasure, and several of us leveled as well. Leveling is exciting when you are playing a magic user because you get to cast more spells per day!

Fun with Fish
I made these last night for dinner during one of those hot, humid evenings. So so yummy! Matt inisted I make them again, and soon. :)
Fish Tacos (from Better Homes and Gardens)
1 pound fresh or frozen skinless cod, orange roughy, or other fish fillets
2 tablespoons butter or margerine, melted
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
3 tablespoons mayonaise or salad dressing
1 teaspoon lime juice (we were out of limes so I used a lemon and it still tasted good)
1 1/2 cups packaged shredded cabbage with carrot (coleslaw mix) or shredded cabbage
8 corn taco shells, warm according to package directions
1 recipe mango salsa (I just bought premade salsa at the store)
1. Thaw fish if frozen. Rinse fish and pat dry with paper towels. Cut fish crosswise into 3/4" slices. Place fish in single layer in greased shallow baking pan. Combine butter, cumin, and garlic powder. Brush over fish. Bake in a 450 degree oven for 4-6 minutes or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork.
2. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, stir together mayonaise and lime juice. Add cabbage; toss to coat. Spoon some of the coleslaw mixture into each taco shell; add fish slices. Top with mango salsa.
Start to Finish: 20 minutes
Makes: 4 servings

A note to those who are unemployed or seeking a new job:
1. Please please PLEASE dress appropriately. Khaki shorts, messy hair, and flip flops don't make a good impression.
2. Show up for the interview! Or if you can't make it, call and let us know why. We can always reschedule. But not calling or showing up will severely impact our decision on whether or not we will place you.
3. Don't give the front office person an attitude. She/he will refer everything to your recruiter.
4. Don't be late and then ask "How long will all of this take? Because I have my mom waiting in the car..."
5. Reading your recruiter's future during the interview? Probably not the best idea.
Yes, all of these things have happened. And more. I just wish I could remember all of them.

Living in L.A.
Sometimes it amazes me that we live here, in a place where it's normal to have 90+ degree days in June, to be sweating in your sleep because you can't cool down, and that you'll suffer through the heat in order to avoid a massive electric bill from the air conditioning.
I sometimes love driving down Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards, with their beautiful palm trees against the brilliant blue sky. It really is a lovely sight.

Can't think of a title
But I know we've been busy. So here's what we've been up to.
Matt's pitch at SciFi went really well! They want to see a series bible and the pilot script which is excellent news. We're keeping our fingers crossed, hoping that this continues to grow. He's unfortunately not been able to get much work done as my sister has been in town this last week, and dad flew in on Friday. Katie's visit has been a good one. Lots of talks, lots of "explaining what it means to be a grown up" and things like that. But we've had fun too. Went to Santa Monica, dinners out, and reading Harry Potter. My job has kept me busy and tired, but I really like what I do, it comes with responsibility I've not had before which I have so desperately needed. What I have to adjust to is that this is a global corporation and our headquarters are in New Jersey - everything must go through them. I've only worked for small, independent companies before so it's taking a bit of getting used to.
Tonight it's dinner with Don and Cindy and tomorrow the family leaves. I'll be sorry to see them go, but we also need to get packing to move into our new place, and we can't do that with extra bodies here!

Summer is definitely here
Days are longer, food tastes better, the weather is warmer, and my allergies are kicking in. We were at The Grove today, had lunch and in the middle of shopping I just started sneezing like a mad-woman. We were going to see Shrek 3 but I couldn't get past the idea of just wanting to go straight home and sleep. Which is what I did. Came home and took a benadryl and slept for 5 hours. I just got up. I don't know how or when I'll go to sleep tonight!
Katie is doing well. Poor thing is so tired. Her last day of school was Thursday. I remember when school was done and all I wanted to do was sleep. Kind of like Jenny and Kevin, only they have a reason for needing sleep! There is the sweetest picture on their blog of Kevin and Patrick. You have to check it out.

We're moving!
So the story goes...
After graduation, Matt and I suddenly discovered we needed more space. He's writing much more, has many projects going on and needs quiet place to work besides the kitchen table. And I decided I'd like to have the table to eat at rather than dine over tv trays. So after a week of phone calls, we have accepted a price and are moving to a 2 bedroom apartment on the 4th floor of our building! :) We will make the move sometime next month. We should be able to move our current deposit to the new place, but we'll probably have to pay for parking which is a bummer. :( It will be an easy move, thankfully. No moving trucks, no boxes, or very few boxes. We are very excited!
I'm just not trying to think about the fact that we are paying twice as much for our new 2bd as our old one back in Washington...ugh...

Clothes Shopping
When I was a teenager you couldn't drag me from the mall. I loved going shopping and seeing all the people. I loved spending money...mostly because it wasn't mine. Now days, it's hard for me to get motivated. But with a new office job and a worn out wardrobe, it was time...for the Sherman Oaks Mall.
Cindy and I braced ourselves yesterday afternoon as we walked into Macy's. The Sherman Oaks Mall is actually quite large and hidden. We wandered into a few over priced shops where a funny situation happened. Cindy noticed a cute sweatshirt hanging on a rack she couldn't reach (we're both vertically challenged) so the sales lady came over and said "You know, this is salvage." We both said oh, okay not realizing that "salvage" was the actual brand and the sweatshirt was over 200 dollars! HAH! We walked out and realized that we both thought that when she said "salvage" we thought resale. We got a kick out of that.
We had a great day shopping. We bought some nice summer clothes at Ann Taylor, we each got a pair of new shoes, and I got a new pair of sunglasses. On our way back to take Cindy home, we also stopped at Trader Joe's which is always fun. Thanks Cindy for a fun afternoon!
This weekend I had chores to do but I didn't do them. Tonight I had make-up chores but didn't do them. I'm way behind. Vaccuming needs to be done and the kitchen needs to be cleaned. And before you know it, Katie will be here...
In exciting news, Matt is pitching a show next week at NBC Universal at the Sci-Fi channel!!! How exciting is this? Less than 3 weeks out of school and already he's got a major meeting. I am so delighted and proud of him!

In the words of Rachael Ray...
Yumo! These burgers are so so declicious. I made them last week and they were a big hit with my guy.
Turkey burgers with grated zucchini and carrot
(From Real Simple Magazine)
3/4 pound ground turkey
1 medium zucchini, grated
1 medium carrot, grated
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
3/4 teaspoon dried thyme
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 large egg
3 tablespoons olive oil
4 slices crusty bread
4 small leaves Boston lettuce
4 tablespoons mayonaise (optional)
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice (optional)
Heat broiler. In a large bowl, combine the turkey, zucchini, carrot, garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, and egg. Form the mixture into 4 patties. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties, turning once, until no trace of pink remains, 4-5 minutes per side. Meanwhile, place the bread on a baking sheet and brush with the remaining oil. Broil until golden and crisp, about 1 1/2 minutes. Transfer the bread to individual plates. Top with the lettuce leaves and burgers. If using, combine the mayonaise and lemon juice in a small bowl and serve with the burgers.
For extra zest, rub the bread with the cut side of a peeled, halved garlic clove immediately after removing the bread from the oven.

Feeling ill
I suppose it was silly of me to think that I wouldn't catch Matt's cold. He got sick after all the family left and the stress died down. He was pretty sick for about 3 days and I woke up yesterday with a tingle in my throat and all sneezy. Thank goodness for airborne. But last night I came home, fixed dinner, and then went to bed at 7. I couldn't keep my eyes open. Naturally, I woke up at 4am. More airborne, maybe some chicken soup for breakfast, and then before work I'll stop by Walgreens to get some more airborne so I can work today. Maybe even go home early.
On Tuesday evening, we headed over to Don and Cindy's which was great fun. They have a wonderful home out in Sherman Oaks. So much character! I especially love how the only way that you can get into the DG office is through the second bedroom. They seem really happy with their new jobs and new home. Cindy, is, as ever, a fantastic cook and Don is fabulous griller. She marinated some steaks and cut up some fresh veggies, and Don took them to the grill. Yummy! Rian was also there with another guy (and his name escapes me now), they brough wonderful sausages from the Farmer's Market. It was a perfect night for sitting around outside, eating our yumtastic dinner and drinking a few beers.
Saturday Mary and I (if I'm better) go out for an early morning hike in Pasadena. I've been told to wear clam diggers and water proof shoes as we cross a stream several times. She said most of it is flat (thank goodness because I have no stamina) and it's absolutely beautiful. I'm really looking forward to it.
Next Saturday evening, Katie arrives for an 8 day stay. We're looking forward to seeing her and having her here. I know that Matt will be in classes a few days a week so I've asked for some time off to get home early so she's not by herself all day long. I suppose this seems like bad timing to get a new job, but I really like what I do (so far) so it's best to just be adult about everything and get through these busy times. I do know that Katie wants to check out a few colleges in the area which will be fun, and she wants to go to the beach. It's also her vacation, so I don't know how busy we'll be when she's here.

He's done! (well, almost)
Matthew graduated today! It was a very entertaining ceremony with wonderful, charismatic speeches and a fabulous surprise arrival by an A list celebrity. We had so much fun with our family and friends.
Details to come. I'm exhausted.
He's not officially done, though >:( Summer classes have officially started and he won't get his diploma until September...but he's ALMOST done! I'm very excited to have my husband back (almost)!

It's official!
I'm working at Ajilon Finance/Office at the Burbank Office. We place candidates in the office (administrative) and financial (accountants) sectors. I really like my co-workers. They are so much fun and even have "dance-offs" every few days to boost morale and keep the energy going. The best part is that I feel like I'm working with these people, not for them. And even though it's a global company, it feels small. There is so much resposibility, which is very exciting. And there's several things I don't know yet, which I will have to be trained on next week. I put in a 12 hour day yesterday just so I could learn everything I could from the previous woman who's last day was yesterday. I'm excited but nervous about Monday. I'm sure I'll be ok. It'll just take me a little time to get used to all the paperwork I'll be pushing around.
Today I'm off to Runyon Canyon with Chandra and her dog, Capone. Then I get my haircut. Afterwards, I'll head home to get Matt and we'll be off to Sherman Oaks to help Don and Cindy unpack. I can't wait to see their new place!
Tomorrow much cleaning will be had. Matt's parents arrive Tuesday evening for graduation, and my Dad arrives Tuesday afternoon. I don't want this place looking like it does now...piles everywhere...

Busy and tired
Saturday I spent with Kari M. who is getting married next October! I hadn't seen her since I got back from my 3 week NW rondeveau last month, so there was much catching up to do. Her friend Jenny was in town from San Francisco, so the three of us plus Amanda and Sonia got together for high tea in Pasadena to see the ring, discuss options, suggestions, and have a girly day. We did some window shopping in Old Town Pas, going into Tiffany's, a Japanese paper shop, bought some clothes at H&M (my new favorite store), and got caught up on all our stories. I did not go out for drinks that night as I was getting exhausted and had a busy weekend ahead of me (we also went to Target at 8pm - best time to go).
Sunday Matt and I went to my friend Marie's wedding. She and her new husband, Eric, are celebrated in chic style. We had never been to a Jewish ceremony before, so that was very interesting and fun to boot. It was at the Sky Room in Long Beach, which has a 360 degree view atop the building in a fabulous restaurant. Each guest was assigned at a table, and each table was named after their favorite movies. Matt and I were assigned to Young Frankenstein along with a few other young married couples. We had a blast. The wine was flowing, the music was hopping, and the food was incredible! The newlyweds were so cute. Marie and Eric had been waiting for this day for so long. It was wonderful to finally see them as, officially, husband and wife.
Monday we headed out to Venice Beach for a BBQ with Mary and Ben and other close AFI friends. We headed out to the beach, had a bit of alchohol, and ate good food. We brought a salmon pasta salad, hard cider, and burgers. Someone brought these chocoloate chip cookie-bars that were simply amazing melt in your mouth awesome. I couldn't eat enough, but after 4 my stomach decided IT had enough. Matt left early to go to another party, and I stayed behind to catch up with Mary.
For those of you who don't know, I got a job! It's not official yet, they are still processing paperwork. But, thanks to Gina Nicole, I am working at a staffing company. We place temps, temps-to-hire, and direct placements in the financial and administrative sectors. More details to come when the position becomes official.
Matt graduates next week. I can't wait! I am so proud of him and all his accomplishments. He is ready to move on to the next phase in his career and both of us can't wait to find out where we're headed next. :)
And, finally, WELCOME to Don and Cindy! We're so excited you're close by!

LOST
1. Is Charlie really dead?
2. With the ending between Jack and Kate, is next season really what Ben eluded to? The beginning of the end?
3. Who is Naomi?
4. Why do we have to wait 6 months for the next new episode? I'm going to go crazy!!!

Minor grievences
1. I can't stand Time Warner Cable. We always have to power cycle our cable box and internet at least once a day. What am I really paying these people for? Can't they use my money to make sure our electronic connections work without constant interuptions?
2. Driving in L.A. can make anyone crazy. Drift over into another lane without your turn signal on, and there's no problem - it's accepted. But put your turn signal on, and everyone just speeds up to pass you. What's that about?
3. Being so tired. I know it's due to a lack of exercise. But everything I want to do in this town costs money. Yoga raised their prices, I don't have the time for bootcamp with my weird schedule, so I guess it's Yoga or Pilates at home. If I could just get my butt moving...
4. Summer is on it's way along with forest fires. What wonder this will do for my allergies!
5. Job rejections over email. That is just taking the easy way out! What wusses.

Weekend with the girls
Friday....I don't remember what I did on Friday...I think we stayed home and just hung out.
Saturday was fun. I went to visit Liz in San Gabriel and we had a lovely lunch at my new favorite spot, Wild Thyme Cafe - they have the best zuchinni bread! We talked and talked and talked some more, catching up on stories that seemed to have happened years ago when it had only been a few months. She's off to an Alaskan cruise later this month but we've sworn to get together more often - none of this "every few months" business.
Yesterday was Mother's Day. To keep my brain occupied, Mary and I headed over to BJ's Brewery in Burbank and then to the Los Angeles Autry Museum to see a fashion exhibit. Lunch was wonderful - berry cider and fish tacos - I couldn't beat the company. The exhibit was nice but small. So we went to the store and got some wine and cheese, but she couldn't find a parking spot. So we rescheduled "wine-o day" for later this week.
Thanks to all who called and sent emails yesterday to make the day a little easier. Much appreciated.

Thoughts
...of Mother's Day. I'm just in denial that it's on Sunday and going to a museum. I was a dutiful daughter (and in-law) and ordered flowers.
...of Matt with his impending graduation and overwhelming thesis.
...of Jenny and her pregnancy, for her to get a few nights of sleep without waking up in the middle of the night.
...of all my interviews and hoping that I get the job here.
...of a man that I have never met, only know through his blog (I wish you peace and strength).
...of Lena and her beautiful garden.
...of (California) Kari and her newly engaged self.
...of Stephanie Paige and Patrick, and their impending move to New York City.

Honesty
I have 2 job interviews tomorrow afternoon. It's awkward being a temp and calling your agency with this information. The (wonderful) lady I work with at the agency, Melissa, was at lunch so I left a message with the receptionist detailing my situation. I explained that I had 2 interviews and wanted to be honest, that they are in the afternoon and seemed like Thursday was the only day I could come in to interview. I don't know what Melissa will say. I was planning the whole time to "call in sick", but figured honesty would be the best policy. She and the agency have been so good to me and so understanding and flexible. I feel terrible about possibly ending the assignment early, but then again, isn't this what being a temp is all about? Being flexible and working with schedules? Gah, I wish my conscience wasn't so sensitive and I could just let things slide. I hate to worry. It's a waste of time. I just wish I could practice that policy.
In other news, the fire was smoldering this morning. No homes have been damaged, but over 600 acres burned.

Send water!
Griffith Park is on fire. It's getting close to homes and the main street, Los Feliz Boulevard. We went up to the rooftop to see the flames, and there's a huge plume of smoke rising just above the AFI campus. We can hear helicopters from our apartment heading over. This is all over the news and the panning shots show the entire park on fire. There hasn't been rain in months and the fire is picking up on all the dry brush and moving very quickly. I don't think we'll have to evacuate, but check here for updates. News just reported that it's out of control and there's several hot spots all over the park. The temperature right now is 83, and we're expected to have weather in the 90's tomorrow. Cold weather is expected by Thursday, which will be too late. There is a zoo in this park, along with horse trail rides and many forms of wildlife live here too. Mostly birds and coyotes. I hope they make it out ok.Chin up
I have another interview on Thursday so here's hoping something works out.
It's interesting working reception at a company like FX. Some people treat you wonderfully and say hello and look at you. Others don't give you the time of day and seem to walk on airs. The "important" people, I don't mind. But the assistants? Come on, man. There is a guy who walks around here, literally, with his nose in the air. I understand that he's in his own head and trying to cover his butt. But really, come on. Get your head out of your ass and treat the gal who's the first face your clients see with some respect. Can you tell there's no way in hell I'd ever want to work this job? I can see why they have a high turn over rate.
I have, however, been getting quite a few compliments on my work here, which is calling people when packages and visitors arrive. I met the receptionist here a few weeks ago when I temped for a mass mailing project. I asked her for some more envelopes and she turned around, bent over, and HELLO!!! Thong! Yuck. Ew. So inappropriate (in my opinion). One woman here even remarked how I obviously like to stay "covered." Heck yeah. My underwear is my own business. No one else's!

Looking up
Two interviews! One tomorrow with another agency and Wednesday with a real estate financial firm. It's amazing how just one response is a huge confidence boost.
No more applications today. I've sent out 12 and gotten one response. That's how competitive it is out there.
More good news though! Matt has signed a contract for writing work and will get paid in installments as he completes the work. Very exciting!

Brain is full
I've applied to several jobs in the past few hours - about 5 - I think. I'm overwhelmed and done with editing my resume and salary history, telling people why they should hire me. No word yet from the manager here at FOX - she barely spoke to me this morning. She's probably just busy. I'll catch her later this afternoon when she's not trying to get caught up from weekend emails and phone calls.
This weekend was wonderfully relaxing and easy. I slept in, saw Spiderman 3 (which was ok, graphics were amazing), and ate chinese food.

Argh!
I didn't get the job in Encino. I don't understand why - they responded well to my interview and I thought I did so well. I'm feeling really shitty right now, like I did when I first started looking for work when I got here. Hopeless. Job searching is just utterly hopeless. Though I did hand off my resume to an Administrator here at FX. We'll see if anything comes of that, but at this point I'd say probably not.
Job #2 - Admissions
I guess they wanted me to come in and temp before they start the interview process, but it starts next week and I already am temping for the other agency. I hope I'm still up for the position - I sent an email to clarify.
Today or early next week I'm supposed to hear back from the job I really want (at the placement agency) as to whether or not I'll be asked in for a 3rd interview. Wish me luck! This job search stuff is aggravating. I applied for a few more this morning so we'll see what happens.

Bored now
Yesterday, today and for the next 7 weekedays I am working at FX and Fox Movie Channel at their reception desk. While it may sound exciting, it's not. All the important people have their own assistants which leaves me surfing the internet and checking my email every 5 minutes. Yes, it is a paycheck and today is going faster than yesterday. So, if you feel like emailing me, leaving a comment here or on myspace, it would really help these next few days.
Last night I had a great class. I'm working hard on my listening skills and focusing my energy on the task at hand rather than fidgeting and releasing energy through menial things, like slamming down a book or a loud sigh. This class is amazing, and I am always excited (and a little nervous) to see what Cliff has to say. I also thanked him for giving me scenes that are comical rather than serious drama. I needed to take a break from crying.
Which reminds me that mother's day is coming up...I could anticipate feeling like crap, feeling depressed, or something else. I think I just want to be busy on that Sunday and not even think about what it means. Of course, I will send flowers to her. And to Nancy. But I feel the need to move on. It's why I'm looking for work and trying to be more responsible. I'm a grown-up and need to start being one.

Maine Coon Kitty

So Quinn has been on this weight loss program for awhile and I took her to the vet last week. She gained 2 ounces...sigh...work with me here, girl! The vet is convinved that she is more than half Maine Coon, a breed of cat that can get well up to over 25 pounds! So I did some research and found some pictures. She is definitely part Maine Coon. The face and neck, the hair, very very similar. So at least that gives me reason to say that I'm doing my best to maintain her weight, but it's not my fault she keeps gaining! It's in her genes! :)
Goings On
Yesterday I had 2 job interviews! One was for a placement agency in Encino. They work with potential employees and private schools, trying to make a good match. This interview went really well and I'm expecting to hear back soon to go in for a 3rd interview. I'm so excited about this particular opportunity. It's a great fit and even though I would be taking the freeway, I'd be driving against traffic.
The other interview was for a private school in Beverly Hills, working in their admissions office. They are hiring through a temp agency so I had to interview with the agency first. Of course, I had to take a grammar test (which I didn't do so good - no surprise there) and a typing test (72 wpm). I don't remember much about the interview itself and by the end my brain was full. I had forgotten how exhausting interviews can be. I should here back (hopefully) today or tomorrow as to whether or not the school wants to meet with me.
On another note, I know I haven't posted in awhile and for you regular readers I'm sorry for that. I've been dealing with grief and anger, and while I know I could post everything about that here, well, I've been quite volatile and that's a side I don't often like to share (my poor husband and my poor therapist). Thanks for your patience and I promise to do a better job of keeping you updated!

Not much to say
I got home on Friday night, couldn't sleep, and Matt and I got into a bit of a spat. That was fun. Everything's worked out though, and I can tell you that this was my last multiple week trek away from my husband. We do not do well being apart for so long, and it makes it that much harder to live together in such a small space.
This weekend I was lazy and still haven't unpacked, though I did clean a little. I still haven't been sleeping well, maybe because this bed is my 4th in 1 week (I know, I just can't stop sleeping around). Matt is stressed with final projects and the last few weeks of classes coming up. Competitions, pitching projects, and all kinds of writing.
Oh, graduation is June 6, and supposedley Al Pacino will be there as the AFI lifetime achievement award winner. I'm so proud of Matt's upcoming graduation and that we get to be in the same vicinity as Al Pacino!

Keeping In Touch
I'm in Montana! And no wonder it's called "big sky country" - it really is huge here! It's raining and snowing, believe me when I tell you I'm freezing. But Mel keeps her apartment warm which is a blessing. Uncle Terry (Sharon's husband) passed his cold on to me (thanks alot!) so I've been sniffling, sneezing, and Mel has been a very gracious hostess with cold medicine and tea. Tonight spaghetti, garlic bread, and red wine is on the menu, followed by a movie and then nyquil! :)
I've made a resolution to keep in better touch, through emails and calls. After this summer I got tired of those and just preferred to talk in person. But I need to get back to where I was, even if it's just a little something. That is my promise to you.

Off to Spokaloo
Tomorrow I'm off to Spokane. My aunt and uncle's place doesn't have the best internet connection, so there may not be updates for awhile. Didn't want you to worry. :) When I get to Montana, since Mel is going to school, I'm sure I can find a computer to update everyone.
Have a great rest of the week and stay warm! It's freezing!

Adventures in the Pacific Northwest
Highlights include:
Spending a night in Aberdeen to visit Jeff and Tina and their two little girls. We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast. Our room had just been remodeled and had a new king bed. Fabulous!
On our way back to Puyallup, we stopped and had lunch with Matt's grandparents which was great fun. We laughed and listened to stories. It was great to see them.
Today we went to Catherine's baptism and are now officially godparents! She is a delight and we plan on spoiling her rotten.
This last Friday, there was a last minute gathering of friends at the house where Don, Cindy, Emily and Matt live (who's house is it?). We got to see so many people that we would have otherwise missed so thank you to those who were able to come. We loved seeing you! (Jenny, you look wonderful!)
Matt leaves tomorrow afternoon, Paige is driving me back to Seattle, and I'll get some time with my Dad and Katie before I take off for Spokane on Wednesday. Then I'll be off to Montana next week for a few days before going back to Burbank. I can't believe I'm over halfway done with my "tour" but I am enjoying (almost) every minute of it.

So far
I've taken the dog for 3+ walks a day.
I've driven Katie around Seattle quite a bit, and had to think hard about how to get there (i.e. U of W) and how to get home. Yet Seattle seems smaller than L.A.
I've worked on the ongoing price list for a few days now. Almost done with the "f" section.
I've had a few nervous breakdowns, one panic attack, and many long talks with myself.
I got to see Brie downtown yesterday for a few hours. She gave me lots of pictures of Catherine. It was wonderful to catch up with her and to spend time with just her, though I can't wait to meet my god-daughter.
Today I get to see Stephanie/Paige. She's on her way here but turned the wrong way and is now somewhere in Fremont or Queen Anne. I'm not sure.
And Matt flies in tonight! SO excited to see him. I miss my sweetie. :(
Tomorrow is a relaxing day at home. I'm hoping to make a good dent in the price list. And help Katie put her clothes away. It's a tornado in there.

Cold Weather Wimp
I think I'm going to freeze. Looking at the weather report, the highs are in the 50's. And that's the temperature here in L.A. this morning. I'm cold already. I packed a sweater, fleece shirt, a jacket, and my rain coat is already in my closet in Seattle. I'll be taking that with me to Spokane and to Bozeman (Montana). It's snowing in Montana.
I don't know what I did with all my long sleeved shirts. I was scrounging when I was packing yesterday. I'll need to buy a pair of doc martens while I'm in town f0r snow-ridden Bozeman. My tennis shoes won't do the trick anymore. I'm officially a cold weather wimp.

It's a funny thing
When I choose to stay up at night with chocolate, water, and a glass of wine when I'm home alone and Matt's out of town, I choose to stay up late and watch movies to take my mind of things, so I can just exhaust myself and go straight to sleep. Funny thing is that all the movies and tv shows on tonight deal with mothers and children.
Figures.
And I'm not that upset, I'm not even crying. I can feel myself separating the movie from my emotions so that I can simply enjoy it. Is that healthy? I'm not sure. All I wanted to do was escape, and yet everything that came on, even most of the commercials, had some sort of mother reference.
Sometimes I let it in. Let it overwhelm me until I count to 20 or 30, however long I can stand it. Then I push it aside again. I just can't deal all at once. I know that's healthy. Right?

The ecstasy and aggravations of Disneyland/California Adventure
Aggravations:
1. Overpriced fried food. That's pretty much all they have. And bring your own water. It was $2.75 for 1 bottle.
2. Naptime at Disneyland. At about 1pm, all the little ones start screaming from being over stimulated and utter exhaustion. I can only imagine how the parents must feel as I stuffed my face due to being overly hungry with my over priced chicken (breaded, of course) sandwich.
3. Lines. My cousin Sarah is physically disabled, so she's in a wheelchair. At California Adventure, the line paths do not have stairs so we did not get to the rides as quickly as we did at Disneyland.
4. Heat vs. Cold. I'll take the heat. Yesterday it was freezing and we went through a white water ride at CA adventure. Brrrrrrr.
5. Hollywood Hotel - Tower of Terror. NEVER AGAIN. I'm glad I went, but NEVER AGAIN. Most frightening ride ever.
Ecstasies:
1. The look on the kids' faces as we went on rides and saw characters throughout the parks.
2. The little vinettes from High School Musical, A Bugs Life, Cars, etc. Very fun and cheap entertainment.
3. The rollercoasters! So worth the price. We went again and again and again and again...I'm surprised I have a voice today.
4. The apple croissants at the Paradise Pier Hotel. Yum. Perfect way to start the day. Along with a ride on Screamin California, the big twisty coaster at California Adventure.
5. Chip and Dale spitting into my cell phone while I was talking with Scott. Priceless.
Pictures to be posted soon.

What happened to spring?
Yesterday it was 88 degrees.
Today the forecast calls for 92. It's not even 10am and we already have the a/c on.
Last week it was in the 50's and 60's, even low 70's.
Can't Mother Nature make this an easier transition?
Yesterday Gina and I went to the 101 Cafe for breakfast. She had eggs, I had french toast, and we chatted and got all caught up. Then, because it was so hot but so lovely outside, we went for a drive around the park and in the hills, trying to think about how you'd fill all these rooms and how all the the houses that had greek statues in front were really just very silly.
She dropped me off at Vermont Street where I spent about 1/2 hour in the little neighborhood bookstore waiting for Mary (who had forgotten about the time change). She arrived, and we found a cute little french bistro for lunch, since the sushi restaurant we originally planned on was closed. It even had decent prices. We sat outside in the shade and talked away about her job, my lack of one, plans for kids, husbands, and the trip to Vegas this summer with our husbands plus Kurt and Emily (2 more writers from AFI). After lunch, we went to see Breach with Ryan Phillipe, Laura Linney, and Chris Cooper. Fabulous spy movie. Highly reccomend it.

Huh
I came home this afternoon to find a sock hanging off my neighbor's door handle. I wonder what that means.... (wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more!)
I stopped to listen, but it was unfortunately quiet.

Tidbits
Therapy has been going well. I adore my counselor, she is wonderful and supportive, just as a therapist should be. I love that Matt and I see different therapists at the same building at the same time, and then reconvine afterwards for date night. Because we're feeling open and relaxed, we have great conversations and are able to talk without being snippy and/or overly tired. Last night we went to a fabulous Italian reataurant where I had risotto with wild mushrooms and sausage, and a dry pinot grigio. Matt had chicken picatta and a beer. For dessert, the best tirimisu we've ever had. Melt in your mouth, and not too heavy on the rum.
These past few days I've been working at a company called Faction. They are a graphics company that do the posters, popcorn bags, mini posters, for movies, and big ones at that. Past projects include Toomraider, Four Brothers, Hitchhiker's Guide, Braveheart...all kinds of interesting films. And it's neat to see the process of what goes into making a poster, making the DVD boxes, and things. It's something, in terms of Hollywood and movies, that I have never really thought about. And great people work here. I have a great time. There's a part time position open, and even though I can't be here Monday or Tuesday, I'm hoping that they will ask me back next week after I get back.
Matt is doing well but creatively somewhat in the toilet. He's burned out and frustrated with several projects, and feeling disgruntled. He wants to go to the beach, so that's what we're doing this weekend. He's so excited and has no idea where we are going (and I'm not going to tell you until after we get back since he reads the blog). Just know that it's a beautiful hotel somewhere on the central California coast, in wine country, and we're both looking forward to having some time together, just us and no outside world stuff.
When I get home I'll post some pictures of our goddaughter, Catherine. Brie sent me some really charming ones. For being barely 1 month old, she's incredibly expressive!

Hollywood Party, 90210 style
(we talked for about 20 minutes, he's really nice)
I also saw Anthony Rapp from Rent which was exciting. Thursday night I went to a full on Hollywood Hills party, complete with a red carpet, security at the door, and the girls who stopped as at the door to see if we had the our names on the list. There were floating candles in the pool, free alchohol, poker tables galore, loud music, and rooms full of merchandise (i.e. the purse room, dress room, and shoe room), all of which you could get for free should you be recognizable. The biggest celeb I met was Joe Pantaliano, who's famous for being "Cypher" in The Matriz and "Francis Fratelli" in The Goonies. His role in Memento is also brilliant. His teeth are so white, I couldn't stop staring. He was nice, but busy, and had other, more interesting people to meet besides one little fan. All in all, it was a fun and interesting experience, but certainly not a lifestyle that I care to have.

A decision has been made!
I finally got to have a chat with one of the senior partners here. Due some mis-communications that happened yesterday, I was finally able to clear the air. She asked me if I was interested in staying, I said "No, my heart just isn't here." I told her I needed to be available for my family, which she understood. I also told her that I wouldn't be able to stay that long, that hiring me would just be delaying the inevitable of finding someone who wants to be here and has an interest in the law. She was nice and understood. She asked why I lived in L.A. and I told her that my husband goes to AFI, and that I knew one of her clients, so we had a nice little chat.
It feels good to have this weight lifted off my shoulders. This is only a temp job and I can stop freaking out (Honestly, I shouldn't have been freaking out in the first place.) This has come to a close, and hopefully at this time next week, someone else will be sitting at this desk.
Thanks, Jenny, for picking up last night, and listening to me whine.

Heavy duty clientele
Including...
Joe Pantaliano
Kelsey Grammer (Happy Birthday!)
Christian Slater
John Landis
I may be going to a screening of What Love Is, possibly the premiere, I'm not sure. And there's some sort of VIP pre-Oscar goodie bag shindig that the ladies from the office have been invited to.
Maybe this job doesn't suck as much as I thought it would. But I'm still finding people for interviews and trying to find someone who wants to be here, who could do a good job. I could use this place for it's contacts, but you all know me and my over active conscience. I couldn't do that. I'd rather find someone who wants to be here and could turn this place around...
I know what y'all are thinking...what is this woman's problem with taking a job with all of these perks and talking to fabulous celebrities? When I come up with an answer, I'll post it.

It's sunny outside, and where am I?
I am inside. To those of you who don't have sunny weather everyday, this may seem like a tragedy. It's a balmy 70 degrees with nice breeze coming through. The birds are singing, the sky is blue, and all seems right with the world. Except my allergies. That is not fun. Not at all. So I am inside, drinking water and trying to not take my allergy meds (ever since Mom passed I have this thing about extra chemicals coursing through my blood), but will probably take benadryl tonight so that I can sleep better.
Last week was fairly busy. I landed a temp job at an estate planning/entertainment law firm. They haven't had a receptionist for over a year, so in place of that the office manager (and she doesn't want that title) has been filling in or they've called in a temp (which is about $24+ an hour). Apparently the temps that have come in aren't exactly with it (Kelly, at work, calls them lemons) but then I show up. Eager, willing, and needing the paycheck for our slowly growing but equally important savings account. The job is cake: answering phones, getting coffee, tea, mail, etc. I can do this job in my sleep. It's not challenging - I've finished 2 books in the last week - and the pay through the temp agency is awesome. But now Kelly is asking me several times a day if I can stay. I have told her "no" on numerous occasions, that this job is not what I'm looking for, and I'm taking off next month for 3 weeks. So finally she wore me down and I said I'd talk to Matt this weekend but I had already made up my mind.
First of all, the job itself pays $14/hr. This is not acceptable to me. I have been making that amount for way too long, so that amount would need to be increased, to at least $17 (but whoever heard of a receptionist that gets paid that amount?) Second, the commute. I can't even begin to say how much I hate that commute. 10 miles away = 1 hour in traffic. Third, I'm way over qualified to be getting coffee and tea for some lawyers who have assistants who could easily get it for them. And did I mention I have to go get someone's lunch? As if! I don't think so. I could easily do this part time, maybe 2 days a week. It would certainly give me the cash that I need in addition to working for my father that would give us some good money to put away. Oh, my decision. Part time. Not full time. No benefits required and $15/hr.
Matt and I have come to an understanding about this, and we finally see eye to eye why I can't do this job full time. I am looking for something challenging and something I can be proud of. The whole thing about getting coffee and tea just rubs me the wrong way. I mean, if I wanted to do that, I'd apply to work at Starbucks. Know what I mean?

V-day
I continuously here v-day tagged as a hallmark holiday, and I agree completely with that statement. Matt and I will barely see each other tomorrow as I have a temp job from 9:30-6:30, and then class form 7:30-10:30. He has class from 7-10. It will be hard enough to spend one of the most romantic days of the year with out him, with each of us pursuing work in one way or the other. But what makes it so much harder is that tomorrow is the 6 month anniversary of Mom's passing. I can't tell you how many times I have nearly burst into tears today, thinking about how 6 months ago today, she was still around. Sure, she was unable to eat, drink, talk, or move, but she was still physically here on this earth. Tomorrow is a huge reminder that she's still gone, that she's not coming back. I don't know why this is so hard for me to accept. Because she's my mom, yes, I know that. Because she was and is awesome, wonderful, supportive, caring, and a fabulous cook. One of my closest friends. Tomorrow is just going to suck, I can feel it. I'm already anticipating calling in ill tomorrow to work. I am already feeling a little unstable, but I'll see how I feel in the morning. In the meantime, I see foresee that haggan dazz ice cream bar in my freezer to be in my tummy by the day's end. And some tears.

History of Buffalo Wings
From my good friend Melanie in Indiana. True story, these words were said.
Setup: The other day we were talking about Westward Expansion - Indians and Buffalo and of course when you talk about Indians and Buffalo...what's the next thing you would talk about...(anyone want to guess...cowboys? NO Way!...Pioneers? Nope...Anyone else want to venture a guess? No one...okay) Of course the next thing you talk about is Buffalo wings! How we got on the subject I have no idea (but that is usual for this class)...and here is the conversation that occurred next (with one extremely embarassed girl.)
Girl in front row: "I thought buffalo wings were made out of buffalo meat."
(Class: Stunned silence)
Guy behind her: "yeah, you know those buffalo with wings - it's so annoying when they fly around"
(Class: some laughter)
Girl in front row: "I know buffalo's don't have wings, but I thought that's where they got their name from - because they used buffalo meat."
(Class: Lots of laughter)
Guy in back of class: "No, the guy who created the sauce that goes on the chicken wings was from Buffalo NY and that's why they're called Buffalo wings."
Girl in front row: "Oh...I really thought it was because they used buffalo meat."
(Class: still laughing)

20's vs. 30's
What is it about being in your twenties that feels so young and fabulous, while also feeling overwhelmed and unstable? And why is it that the 30's look so much more comfortable, more stable, when everything seems to come together. Myself and my friends in the 20's, I don't know, feel frazzled and pressured to "find direction". When, it seems my friends in their 30's, seemed to have found direction and are more content. And why is it when you say that you're 20something, people seem to not respect you as much as when others say that their are 30? I work just as hard and I'm nearly thirty...but somehow being 29 doesn't have the same effect as being 30.
I can't wait to be 30. Seriously. I am done with my twenties. Bring me stability. Bring me direction. I'm ready.
When will I turn 30? August 10, 2008. 18 months. Bleah.

Ups and Downs
Up: I'm awake earlier than usual which means I can get a head start on the day.
Down: I will actually spend my day worrying about Matt's upcoming graduation, the day we got the last loan check, and about my job.
Up: I'm going to work out this morning.
Down: I'm depressed and don't want to. I feel like I'm a two year old. I just don't WANNA! :(
Up: I saw Mom in my dreams again last night and felt so happy.
Down: But in reality, I'm so sad.

Happy Superbowl Sunday
Matt: How was the store?
Me: Oh fine. I left just as it started getting really busy.
Matt: Did you get any goodies?
Me: Well, let's see. I got avacaodos to make guacamole, I got pico de gallo salsa, lime tortilla chips, potato chips, cheezits, hamburger fixins including those potato hamburger buns you like...and I think that's about it...oh and a can of organic spicy chilli.
Matt: Why are you spoiling me?
Me: I don't know, cause it's man day?

She's here!
Catherine Eleanor was born last night at 8:58pm. 8 pounds, 14 ounces, and 20 inches long. I am so proud of her parents and so excited to meet her in April. When I first heard the details, there were 2 thoughts that went through my head: "Oh my gosh, she's here, she's finally here!" and "Oh my god, OW!"

My little Ellie
My god-daughter, Catherine Eleanor, is arriving today. Her mom, my dear friend Brianna, went into labor last night and we just got a phone call that she should be arriving soon. We got a call from Dad, Stephen, who sounds completely exhuasted but so so excited and happy this morning. Matt and I can't wait to meet her!

Rambling
I'm trying somthing new. Through google email, I can actually type a document and publish it directly through my blog rather than logging into the blogger site. We'll see if it looks halfway decent and actually works. (It didn't.)
Last night was acting class and it went really well. I had a breakthrough. Even though I am a very emotional person I've been working very hard at staying in control, which has been detrimental to my acting. I just hold it all in and "act" my way through it which is something Cliff has been trying to get me to stop since I started class in November of 2005. Finally, last week, during taping, after a terrible first take, he asked me why I kept "acting" so frustrated and angry throughout the entire scene. I could only say "I just want....I mean, I...." and then burst into tears. Then the cameras rolled, and I had a breakthrough. It felt really good. I'm on the next step, finally something has clicked.
It's odd, grieving the loss of a parent. I mean, grieving is one thing. I have grieved grandparents, relatives I barely know, and colleagues of my parents. None of my friends have died, no children I know, no Aunts or Uncles. So to lose someone that I was so close to, it's the hardest thing I've ever done, to try and accept it. And last night Cliff started talking about death, and for the second time in a row, in class, I just burst into tears. I haven't been crying lately. I don't cry at home or even at therapy. For some reason, class is the place where it just comes out. And my eyes are puffy this morning, but I don't feel so sad right now. I'm sure that will come up again the week after next, when we start a whole new session.
One last thing - one of my favorite blogs is written by Molly. She has a way with words and even pictures that is refreshing and thoughtful. She lets us into her life with tidbits of info, and always making me wonder what she'll have to say next.

One last thing - one of my favorite blogs is written by Molly. She has a way with words and even pictures that is refreshing and thoughtful. She lets us into her life with tidbits of info, and always making me wonder what she'll have to say next.

Going to my head
For those of you who haven't seen the haircut, I look like a pixie now. I cut it in September, much to my dismay, when I went in for a trim he cut it SHORT. Long story short, 5 months later and in 2007 it's finally where I want it. Cute, sassy, and pixie like. Matt loves it, family loves it, friends love it, it's going to my head. But I have to say, I love it too (finally).Thursday, January 25, 2007
scary
There is a man yelling in the apartment below, something about "I can't believe this!" and crying and screaming and moaning. It's kind of psychotic actually. I'm not sure if it's real or he's a talented actor, but it's really freaking me out.
A few strange things
1. I went to get my hair done yesterday, and stopped in at the coffee shop next door to get some lunch. The lady at the counter asked if it was to go or if I was going to eat in the shop. I said I was going to get my hair done, and she said I could go next door and she'd bring it over! I was kind of surprised, I mean, that wasn't necessary, and I told her so. Apparently it's normal between these two businesses. So I took my lunch over myself, totally amazed at the random hospitality she offered me.
2. Today I went to Fred 62 for lunch with Matt and the Editor of Gamers 2, and we were taken care of by a very sweet waitress. She had an eastern european accent that reminded us of a vampire, and Dan kept saying to us that he really wanted her to bite him in the neck. She was cute, but I thought that was a strange desire. To each his/her own, I guess.

History
It's so interesting to go back a few years and read old posts. How naive I was about that dreadful job at the temple of doom, how well mom was doing, how homesick I was when I first moved here. The strains and joys of the past few years. Sometimes I forget how capable I am, how capable my friends and family are, of amazing things. We are stronger than we think. And I'm a little happier now, at this moment, knowing that if I can get through all that previous stuff, then my life now isn't so bad.

I'm a officially a grown up
I'm so grown up now. Why, you ask? Because I'm excited about the new vaccum cleaner I got for Christmas. It's not just any vaccum cleaner. It's a robot. A roomba to be exact. And I love it. I'm vaccuming 2x a week now. All I do is push a button and off it goes. :D

Better
After 6 days of coughing, sneezing, and other fun things that come with being sick with a nasty cold, I'm finally better. So I went to boot camp yesterday morning and was so exhuasted I took a 3 hour nap and then slept 10 hours last night. And I'm still tired. Did I over do it? Maybe. My legs are like lead - I can barely move, but I'll get back into the swing of things, and before I know it I'll be able to run a marathon, or at least around the track once before stopping to walk and pant like a dog. I'm so out of shape. It's pathetic.
In my hometown of Seattle, it's been snowing like crazy. I don't know if ya'll have heard (and that y'all is thanks to Mary, my friend from Texas. She's had an influence on me) but it's been snowing like mad. Lows of 20 or lower and the highs are only in the 30s. Now before those of you from the midwest say "oh, you are such wimps, it's only snow!", consider that Seattle is a very hilly city and dangerous to drive when icy. Schools shut down only after a few inches, people stay home from work, it's crazy. But when you're a kid, what better way to spend a snow day than my sister did - going up to Whistler to snowboard.
And a very happy belated birthday to Jenny. I hope it was happy!

Second Round
I'm sick, again, this time with laryngitis. It really hit me yesterday, go figure that yesterday was also my first day of acting class and I had a yelling scene. Don't worry, I can still talk. My voice is just raspy and a little sexy. Hehe.
I have been thinking about Mom quite a bit these days. About motherhood in general and how I'm feeling about my friends who are moms and who are pregnant. And while I am so happy for them, there's a tiny bit of jealousy (sometimes not so tiny) that their kids get their moms, that they get to be the Mom and nurture their children. Granted, I take the 2 year old thought sometimes in thinking "It's not fair!" but all of the Moms that I know are good moms, so in the long run, I'm not so jealous. But if I don't respond and oogle over your adventures as motherhood, it's just because I'm missing being mothered by my mom.

Playing hostess
Stephanie/Paige is in town until Tuesday which is why I haven't written in awhile. She arrived last Wednesday and we took off for Santa Barbara wine country for 2 days, went to a wedding reception, and spent today in Venice Beach. Tomorrow is the fashion district downtown, and Tuesday night she leaves. :( We'll definitely go to Rodeo drive, maybe even Malibu.
I'll write more details after she leaves. Right now I just want to enjoy her being here. We're having a great time.

Resolutions
Okay, thanks to Jenny, I now feel the need to post my new years resolutions because maybe that way I'll accomplish at least one or two of them.
1. Exercise three times a week (which is going to happen when bootcamp starts next Monday);
2. Eat less sugar, more protein and fresh veggies/fruits. Only one junk food day allowed.
3. Eat out only once a week, or not at all;
4. More date nights with hubby;
5. Keep in better touch with family and friends;
6. Pick my battles;
7. READ books, not just skim through in order to get a vague idea;
8. Get books from the libary. I can't afford them and my bookshelf is full. I don't have room in this apartment for another one;
9. I'm a grown up. Need to be asleep at this time. Go to bed earlier. Preferably before midnight.
I think that should do it. Wish me luck!
